President Carter, pressured from all sides to develop a tax-cut plan before November’s election, responded Thursday by proposing $27.6 billion in tax reductions for businesses and individuals. The Polk County Historical Association will meet today at 3:30 p.m. at the Stearns Elementary School Auditorium in Columbus. The Polk County Commissioners will meet today at 3 p.m. at the courthouse in Columbus. The Landrum Lions Club will meet tonight at 7 p.m. at the Landrum Civic Center. Opening Show At Fine Arts Center The opening show in the gallery of the Tryon Fine Arts Center is an exhibit of acrylic paintings by David Yaghjian of Saluda. He is the new instructor on the teaching staff of the Tryon Painters and Sculptors. A spokesman said that his paint ings are excellent and he will be at his opening reception Sunday, Sept. 7th from 3 to 5 p.m. New Firmen Billy Wall and Richard Waters have joined the Tryon Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. Wall is with James Wofford Contractor and Mr. Waters is with Cowan's Hardware. Miss Carol Walker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Walker of Rt 1- Columbus has returned to East Carolina University at Greenvilla where she is a senior. Keith Burress of Landrum has returned to Carson-Newman College, Jefferson City, Tenn- Keith is a member of the football team and plays offensive tackle Dawn Gantt Is Honored Miss Dawn Gantt of Columbus, a second year law student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has accepted an invitation to join the North Carolina Law Review. Members of The Review gain invaluable experience in legal research writing. Selection is based on outstanding academic performance and is the highest honor bestowed upon second year law students. Dawn currently enjoys the number one class ranking in a class of 215. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Gant. Thompson Signs With Furman Friday's Spartanburg Herald had a picture of Tim Thompson of Landrum signing a track grant- in-aid with Furman University as his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Thompson and Landrum Coach Danny McDowell looked on. Thompson, the S. C. Class A Champion in the 100 meters last spring had career bests of: 10:83 in the 100 meters and 22.75 in the 200 meters. One High School The creation of a single senior high school for all Rutherford County students in grades 10.12 is under consideration by the County Board of Education. Girls Tennis Starts Today The Tryon High School girls tennis season opens today at T. C. Roberson High School. The first home game is tomorrow (Wed.) with A. C. Reynolds at 4 p.m. The girls are now playing in a league with Roberson, Reynolds, Brevard and Erwin. Other matches are planned with Travelers Rest and Landrum. Junior varsity matches are planned with Gaffney and Boiling Springs. Seven girls are returning from last year’s team.
